Toonami 2019 Retrospective

One thing I always enjoy doing at the end of each year is looking back on some of the more memorable Toonami moments for the year. This is by no means an in depth retrospective going over every key detail for the year but instead just the things that stuck out the most for me.
Uzumaki
The most exciting thing about Toonami for me is whenever there is news of a new series being made for the block. Like last year with news of Blade Runner Black Lotus being produced, this year there was an announcement of an anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki. This adaptation will be four episodes and will be entirely in black and white. Some of the revealed staff members on the show are fairly noteworthy. The director will be Hiroshi Nagahama, who is known for directing Mushishi and The Flowers of Evil. The soundtrack will be done by Colin Stetson, who has done the score for Hereditary and Red Dead Redemption 2. From the look of the show and people working on it, I can’t wait to see Uzumaki on the block.
The End of Mainstays
One thing that has always been consistent for the block is having a number of longer running shows. This year marked the end for two of them. Hunter x Hunter finished its run of over three years on the block, beginning in April 2016 and ending in June 2019. Dragon Ball Super also ended its run on the block that lasted for a little under three years, going from January 2017 to October 2019. After the final episode of Super aired there was news that it would rerun on the block. After a bit of speculation as to where the reruns would begin, it ended up just being the final 4 episodes. After those episodes finished, Super has not been seen on Toonami again. While these long runners may have ended, they did entertain viewers for multiple years and I am sure people have a lot of fun memories watching them.
Broadcast Errors
2019 has been a year to feature a few notable on-air problems. Perhaps the most memorable issue occurred during episode 6 of Sword Art Online Alicization. Roughly halfway through the broadcast, the show just stopped. Following the pause, there was a long run of commercials. Once the commercials finished airing, Megalobox started airing 15 minutes early. Following the first commercial, Megalobox would restart from the beginning. After that, the rest of the night’s programming aired without any issues. As a result of this issue, episode 6 was rerun following week and episodes 7 and 8 were played back to back the week after that. Attack on Titan also had a fairly notable issue for one episode. Episode 56 ended normally just like every other episode. The major issue is that episode 56 featured an after credit scene with a young Grisha Yeager. This scene in important due to helping to set up the events for the following episode. Thankfully the scene was put on online and also aired before the beginning of episode 57. Lastly, Dragon Ball Super had an issue that impacted numerous episodes. Due to concerns of epilepsy occurring during intense fights that feature the animation flashing, these fights had their frame rate lowered. The issue is that Adult Swim was not aware that the frame rate was already lowered when they got the episodes and lowered it again. Having the frame rate lowered twice caused some fights to resemble PowerPoint presentations. This would persist for a number of weeks until the issue was corrected. It is worth pointing out that even though these various issues happened, an effort was made to try to correct each one.
The Forge
After a two year break from the last Total Immersion Event Countdown, we got a new TIE in The Forge. This six part TIE begins with the Vindication warping to a space station known as the forge. TOM arms himself and begins confronting the inhabitants of the base, but is shocked to when he sees a robot that is a yellow version of himself. While distracted, TOM is knocked out from behind by an alien that TOM would later affectionately call Booger. TOM wakes up in a cell and is informed by SARA that the Clydes are dead. With assistance from SARA, TOM escapes from his cell and befriends one of the labor TOMs. After being reprogrammed, the labor TOM begs for TOM to free the other labor TOMs. TOM fights his way to the labor TOMs and convinces them to escape. TOM and the labor TOMs get close to boarding the Vindication but an ambush forces them to retreat. TOM puts up one last stand to buy time for the labor TOMs to reach the Vindication and escape. The labor TOMs successfully escape, but TOM is destroyed by Booger. Thankfully TOM backed himself up and SARA brings him back in a new body. Back and better than ever, TOM confronts Booger and with assistance from SARA, manages to beat him. The TIE ends with the labor TOMs in space in the Vindication along with Georgia, Booger being launched out into space, and The Forge becoming the new home for TOM and SARA. A new home comes with a new design for the block and this time, Toonami has an 80’s inspired look with neon blue and purple.
New Shows
One constant for Toonami is people speculating, predicting, and wishing for new shows to come to the block. While it is impossible to have every show people want to come, there were still a number of new shows to appear on the block in 2019. Here is a quick rundown of the new shows to come to the block this year. Promised Neverland followed the adventures of kids with smushed faces on their quest to not become the answer to the question of what is for dinner. Food Wars followed Soma on his culinary quest to make watching anime with your family as awkward as possible. Fire Force showed the adventures of fire fighters and the battle to not have one of their members constantly get naked. Rooster Teeth made their first appearance on the block with gen:LOCK, a series that followed Michael B. Jordan and his magic robot. Dr. Stone followed the adventures of a shiny monkey on their quest to make drugs with the power of science. Lastly, Demon Slayer showed Ufotable’s quest to make fights against demons look as stylish as possible.
Returning Shows
Another constant for the block is older shows returning when new seasons are produced. 2019 was no exception as there were a variety of sequels that aired this year. Attack on Titan season 3 part 2 finally answered the multiyear long mystery of what is in the basement. Sword Art Online Alicization had Kirito returning to the virtual world on his quest to kill another God in a video game. Lupin the Third Part 5 had Lupin utilizing technology to steal bitcoin along with his normal heists. One Punch Man season 2 featured the return of Saitama and friends as they battle Garou, newer monsters, and a new animation studio. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind followed DIO’s son Giovanni Giorno on his quest to become a gangster and fight more musical references. Lastly, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin - Advent of the Red Comet followed a young Char Aznable in an origin story that I have been told is a bad place to start watching Gundam.
With 2020 just around the corner, there is plenty to look forward to. There are sequels to shows that have already aired on the block that could come like Sword Art Online War of Underworld, Mob Psycho 100 II, Promised Neverland season 2, and Attack on Titan season 4. There are also new shows like Uzumaki and Blade Runner Black Lotus to look forward to, as well as the chance of any new shows getting announced. Overall 2019 was a fun year for the block and I am excited to see what 2020 brings.

[META] New to PC Building? - September 2018 Edition

Intro

You've heard from all your gaming friends/family or co-workers that custom PCs are the way to go. Or maybe you've been fed up with your HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, etc. pre-builts or Macs and want some more quality and value in your next PC purchase. Or maybe you haven't built a PC in a long time and want to get back into the game. Well, here's a good place to start.

Instructions

  1. Make a budget for your PC (e.g., $800, $1000, $1250, $1500, etc.).
  2. Decide what you will use your PC for.
    • For gaming, decide what games and at what resolution and FPS you want to play at.
    • For productivity, decide what software you'll need and find the recommended specs to use those apps.
    • For a bit of both, your PC build should be built on the HIGHEST specs recommended for your applications (e.g., if you only play FortNite and need CPU power for CFD simulations, use specs recommended for CFD).
Here are some rough estimates for builds with entirely NEW parts:
    1080p 60FPS ultra-settings modern AAA gaming: ~$1,200
    1440p 60FPS high/ultra-settings modern AAA gaming: ~$1,600
    1080p 144FPS ultra-settings modern AAA gaming: $2,000
    4K 50FPS medium/high-settings modern AAA gaming: > $2,400
It's noted that some compromises (e.g., lower settings and/or resolution) can be made to achieve the same or slightly lower gaming experience within ±15% of the above prices. It's also noted that you can still get higher FPS on older or used PCs by lowering settings and/or resolution AND/OR buying new/used parts to upgrade your system. Make a new topic about it if you're interested.
Also note that AAA gaming is different from e-sport games like CSGO, DOTA2, FortNite, HOTS, LoL, Overwatch, R6S, etc. Those games have lower requirements and can make do with smaller budgets.
  3. Revise your budget AND/OR resolution and FPS until both are compatible. Compare this to the recommended requirements of the most demanding game on your list. For older games, you might be able to lower your budget. For others, you might have to increase your budget.
It helps to watch gaming benchmarks on Youtube. A good example of what you're looking for is something like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eLxSOoSdjY). Take note of the resolution, settings, FPS, and the specs in the video title/description; ask yourself if the better gaming experience is worth increasing your budget OR if you're okay with lower settings and lowering your budget. Note that you won't be able to see FPS higher than 60FPS for Youtube videos; something like this would have to be seen in-person at a computer shop.
  4. Make a build on https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/. If you still have no idea how to put together parts, start here (http://www.logicalincrements.com/) to get an understanding of PC part tiers. If you want more info about part explanations and brief buying tips, see the next section below.
  5. Click on the Reddit logo button next to Markup, copy and paste the generated text (in markup mode if using new Reddit), and share your build for review!
  6. Consider which retailer to buy your parts from. Here's a table comparing different retailers: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L8uijxuoJH4mjKCjwkJbCrKprCiU8CtM15mvOXxzV1s/edit?usp=sharing
  7. Buy your parts! Use PCPP above to send you e-mail alerts on price drops or subscribe to /bapcsalescanada for deals.
You can get parts from the following PC retailers in alphabetical order:
  8. After procuring your parts, it's time to build. Use a good Youtube tutorial like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhX0fOUYd8Q) that teach BAPC fundamentals, but always refer to your product manuals or other Youtube tutorials for part-specific instructions like CPU mounting, radiator mounting, CMOS resetting, etc. If it everything still seems overwhelming, you can always pay a computer shop or a friend/family member to build it for you.
It might also be smart to look up some first-time building mistakes to avoid:
  9. Share your experience with us.
  10. If you have any other questions, use the search bar first. If it's not there, make a topic.

BAPC News (Last Updated - 2018/09/20)

CPU

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-9000-series-cpu-faq,37743.html
Intel 9000 CPUs (Coffee Lake Refresh) will be coming out in Q4. With the exception of i9 (8-core, 12 threads) flagship CPUs, the i3, i5, and i7 lineups are almost identical to their Intel 8000 (Coffee Lake) series, but slightly clocked faster. If you are wondering if you should upgrade to the newer CPU on the same tier (e.g., i5-8400 to i5-9400), I don't recommend that you do as you will only see marginal performance increases.

Mobo

https://www.anandtech.com/show/13135/more-details-on-intels-z390-chipset-exposed
Z370s will now be phased out for Z390s boards, which will natively support Intel 9000 CPUs (preferably i5-9600K, i7-9700K, and i9-9900K).

GPU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDrpsv0QIR0
RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti benchmarks are out; they provide ~10 and ~20 frames better than the 1080 Ti and also feature ray tracing (superior lighting and shadow effects) which is featured in only ~30 games so far (i.e., not supported a lot); effectively, they provide +25% more performance for +70% increased cost. My recommendation is NOT to buy them unless you need it for work or have lots of disposable income. GTX 1000 Pascal series are still relevant in today's gaming specs.

Part Explanations

CPU

The calculator part. More GHz is analogous to fast fingers number crunching in the calculator. More cores is analogous to having more calculators. More threads is analogous to having more filing clerks piling more work for the calculator to do. Microarchitectures (core design) is analogous to how the internal circuit inside the calculator is designed (e.g., AMD FX series are slower than Intel equivalents even with higher OC'd GHz speeds because the core design is subpar). All three are important in determining CPU speed.
In general, higher GHz is more important for gaming now whereas # cores and threads are more important for multitasking like streaming, video editing, and advanced scientific/engineering computations. Core designs from both AMD and Intel in their most recent products are very good now, but something to keep in mind.

Overclocking

The basic concept of overclocking (OCing) is to feed your CPU more power through voltage and hoping it does calculations faster. Whether your parts are good overclockers depends on the manufacturing process of your specific part and slight variations in materials and manufacturing process will result in different overclocking capability ("silicon lottery"). The downside to this is that you can void your warranties because doing this will produce excess heat that will decrease the lifespan of your parts AND that there is a trial-and-error process to finding OC settings that are stable. Unstable OC settings result in computer freezes or random shut-offs from excess heat. OCing will give you extra performance often for free or by investing in a CPU cooler to control your temperatures so that the excess heat will not decrease your parts' lifespans as much. If you don't know how to OC, don't do it.

Current Products

Intel CPUs have higher GHz than AMD CPUs, which make them better for gaming purposes. However, AMD Ryzen CPUs have more cores and threads than their Intel equivalents. The new parts are AMD Ryzen 3, 5, or 7 2000 series or Intel i3, i5, or i7 8000 series (Coffee Lake). Everything else is outdated.
If you want to overclock on an AMD system, know that you can get some moderate OC on a B350/B450 with all CPUs. X370/X470 mobos usually come with better VRMs meant for OCing 2600X, 2700, and 2700X. If you don't know how to OC, know that the -X AMD CPUs have the ability to OC themselves automatically without manually settings. For Intel systems, you cannot OC unless the CPU is an unlocked -K chip (e.g., i3-8350K, i5-8600K, i7-8700K, etc.) AND the motherboard is a Z370 mobo. In general, it is not worth getting a Z370 mobo UNLESS you are getting an i5-8600K and i7-8700K.

CPU and Mobo Compatibility

Note about Ryzen 2000 CPUs on B350 mobos: yes, you CAN pair them up since they use the same socket. You might get an error message on PCPP that says that they might not be compatible. Call the retailer and ask if the mobo you're planning on buying has a "Ryzen 2000 Series Ready" sticker on the box. This SHOULD NOT be a problem with any mobos manufactured after February 2018.
Note about Intel 9000 CPUs on B360 / Z370 mobos: same as above with Ryzen 2000 CPUs on B350 or X370 boards.

CPU Cooler (Air / Liquid)

Air or liquid cooling for your CPU. This is mostly optional unless heavy OCing on AMD Ryzen CPUs and/or on Intel -K and i7-8700 CPUs.
For more information about air and liquid cooling comparisons, see here:

Motherboard/mobo

Part that lets all the parts talk to each other. Comes in different sizes from small to big: mITX, mATX, ATX, and eATX. For most people, mATX is cost-effective and does the job perfectly. If you need more features like extra USB slots, go for an ATX. mITX is for those who want a really small form factor and are willing to pay a premium for it. eATX mobos are like ATX mobos except that they have more features and are bigger - meant for super PC enthusiasts who need the features.
If you are NOT OCing, pick whatever is cheap and meets your specs. I recommend ASUS or MSI because they have RMA centres in Canada in case it breaks whereas other parts are outside of Canada like in the US. If you are OCing, then you need to look at the quality of the VRMs because those will greatly influence the stability and lifespan of your parts.

Memory/RAM

Part that keeps Windows and your software active. Currently runs on the DDR4 platform for new builds. Go for dual channel whenever possible. Here's a breakdown of how much RAM you need:
AMD Ryzen CPUs get extra FPS for faster RAM speeds (ideally 3200MHz) in gaming when paired with powerful video cards like the GTX 1070. Intel Coffee Lake CPUs use up a max of 2667MHz for B360 mobos. Higher end Z370 mobos can support 4000 - 4333MHz RAM depending on the mobo, so make sure you shop carefully!
It's noted that RAM prices are highly inflated because of the smartphone industry and possibly artificial supply shortages. For more information: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/263031-ram-prices-roof-stuck-way

Storage

Part that store your files in the form of SSDs and HDDs.

Solid State Drives (SSDs)

SSDs are incredibly quick, but are expensive per TB; they are good for booting up Windows and for reducing loading times for gaming. For an old OEM pre-built, upgrading the PC with an SSD is the single greatest speed booster you can do to your system. For most people, you want to make sure the SSD you get is NOT DRAM-less as these SSDs do not last as long as their DRAM counterparts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybIXsrLCgdM). It is also noted that the bigger the capacity of the SSD, the faster they are. SSDs come in four forms:
The 2.5" SATA form is cheaper, but it is the old format with speeds up to 550MB/s. M.2 SATA SSDs have the same transfer speeds as 2.5" SATA SSDs since they use the SATA interface, but connect directly to the mobo without a cable. It's better for cable management to get an M.2 SATA SSD over a 2.5" SATA III SSD. M.2 PCI-e SSDs are the newest SSD format and transfer up to 4GB/s depending on the PCI-e lanes they use (e.g., 1x, 2x, 4x, etc.). They're great for moving large files (e.g., 4K video production). For more info about U.2 drives, see this post (https://www.reddit.com/bapccanada/comments/8jxfqs/meta_new_to_pc_building_may_2018_edition/dzqj5ks/). Currently more common for enterprise builds, but could see some usage in consumer builds.

Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)

HDDs are slow with transfer speeds of ~100MB/s, but are cheap per TB compared to SSDs. We are now at SATA III speeds, which have a max theoretical transfer rate of 600MB/s. They also come in 5400RPM and 7200RPM forms. 5400RPM uses slightly less power and are cheaper, but aren't as fast at dealing with a large number of small files as 7200RPM HDDs. When dealing with a small number of large files, they have roughly equivalent performance. It is noted that even a 10,000RPM HDD will still be slower than an average 2.5" SATA III SSD.

Others

SSHDs are hybrids of SSDs and HDDs. Although they seem like a good combination, it's much better in all cases to get a dedicated SSD and a dedicated HDD instead. This is because the $/speed better for SSDs and the $/TB is better for HDDs. The same can be said for Intel Optane. They both have their uses, but for most users, aren't worth it.

Overall

I recommend a 2.5" or M.2 SATA ≥ 250GB DRAM SSD and a 1TB or 2TB 7200RPM HDD configuration for most users for a balance of speed and storage capacity.

Video Card/GPU

Part that runs complex calculations in games and outputs to your monitor and is usually the most expensive part of the budget. The GPU you pick is dictated by the gaming resolution and FPS you want to play at.
In general, all video cards of the same product name have almost the same non-OC'd performance (e.g., Asus Dual-GTX1060-06G has the same performance as the EVGA 06G-P4-6163-KR SC GAMING). The different sizes and # fans DO affect GPU OCing capability, however. The most important thing here is to get an open-air video card, NOT a blower video card (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0domMRFG1Rw). The blower card is meant for upgrading pre-builts where case airflow is limited.
For cost-performance, go for the NVIDIA GTX cards because of the cryptomining industry that has inflated AMD RX cards. Bitcoin has taken a -20% hit since January's $10,000+ as of recently, but the cryptomining industry is still ongoing. Luckily, this means prices have nearly corrected itself to original MSRP in 2016.
In general:
Note that if your monitor has FreeSync technology, get an AMD card. If your monitor has G-Sync, get a NVIDIA card. Both technologies allow for smooth FPS gameplay. If you don't have either, it doesn't really matter which brand you get.
For AMD RX cards, visit https://www.pcworld.com/article/3197885/components-graphics/every-amd-radeon-rx-graphics-card-you-can-buy-for-pc-gaming.html

New NVIDIA GeForce RTX Series

New NVIDIA 2000 RTX series have been recently announced and will be carried in stores in Q3 and Q4. Until all of the products have been fully vetted and reviewed, we cannot recommend those yet as I cannot say if they are worth what NVIDIA has marketed them as. But they will be faster than their previous equivalents and will require more wattage to use. The 2070, 2080, and 2080 Ti will feature ray tracing, which is a new feature seen in modern CG movies that greatly enhances lighting and shadow effects. At this time, < 30 games will use ray tracing (https://www.pcgamer.com/21-games-will-support-nvidias-real-time-ray-tracing-here-are-demos-of-tomb-raider-and-control/). It's also noted that the 2080 Ti is the Titan XP equivalent, which is why it's so expensive. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Irs8jyEmmPQ) The community's general recommendation is NOT to pre-order them until we see some reviews and benchmarks from reviewers first.
Looks like a couple of benchmarks are out. While keeping other parts equal the following results were obtained(https://videocardz.com/77983/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-and-rtx-2080-official-performance-unveiled). So the 2080 and 2080 Ti are better than last generation's 1080 Ti by ~10 and ~20 frames respectively.

Case

Part that houses your parts and protects them from its environment. Should often be the last part you choose because the selection is big enough to be compatible with any build you choose as long as the case is equal to or bigger than the mobo form factor.
Things to consider: aesthetics, case airflow, cable management, material, cooling options (radiators or # of fan spaces), # fans included, # drive bays, toolless installation, power supply shroud, GPU clearance length, window if applicable (e.g., acrylic, tempered glass), etc.
It is recommended to watch or read case reviews on Youtube to get an idea of a case's performance in your setup.

Power Supply/PSU

Part that runs your PC from the wall socket. Never go with an non-reputable/cheap brand out on these parts as low-quality parts could damage your other parts. Recommended branded PSUs are Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, and Thermaltake, generally. For a tier list, see here (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/).

Wattage

Wattage depends on the video card chosen, if you plan to OC, and/or if you plan to upgrade to a more powerful PSU in the future. Here's a rule of thumb for non-OC wattages that meet NVIDIA's recommendations:
There are also PSU wattage calculators that you can use to estimate your wattage. How much wattage you used is based on your PC parts, how much OCing you're doing, your peripherals (e.g., gaming mouse and keyboard), and how long you plan to leave your computer running, etc. It is noted that these calculators use conservative estimates, so use the outputted wattage as a baseline of how much you need. Here are the calculators (thanks, VitaminDeity).
Pick ONE calculator to use and use the recommended wattage, NOT recommended product, as a baseline of what wattage you need for your build. Note that Cooler Master and Seasonic use the exact calculator as Outervision. For more details about wattage, here are some reference videos:

Modularity

You might also see some info about modularity (non-modular, semi-modular, or fully-modular). These describe if the cables will come connected to the PSU or can be separated of your own choosing. Non-modular PSUs have ALL of the cable connections attached to the PSU with no option to remove unneeded cables. Semi-modular PSUs have separate cables for HDDs/SSDs and PCI-e connectors, but will have CPU and mobo cables attached. Modular PSUs have all of their cables separate from each other, allowing you to fully control over cable management. It is noted that with decent cooling and airflow in your case, cable management has little effect on your temperatures (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDCMMf-_ASE).

80+ Efficiency Ratings

As for ratings (80+, 80+ bronze, 80+ gold, 80+ platinum), these are the efficiencies of your PSU. Please see here for more information. If you look purely on electricity costs, the 80+ gold PSUs will be more expensive than 80+ bronze PSUs for the average Canadian user until a breakeven point of 6 years (assuming 8 hours/day usage), but often the better performance, longer warranty periods, durable build quality, and extra features like fanless cooling is worth the extra premium. In general, the rule of thumb is 80+ bronze for entry-level office PCs and 80+ gold for mid-tier or higher gaming/workstation builds. If the price difference between a 80+ bronze PSU and 80+ gold PSU is < 20%, get the 80+ gold PSU!

Warranties

Warranties should also be looked at when shopping for PSUs. In general, longer warranties also have better PSU build quality. In general, for 80+ bronze and gold PSU units from reputable brands:
Any discrepancies are based on varied wattages (i.e., higher wattages have longer warranties) or updated warranty periods. Please refer to the specific product's warranty page for the correct information. For EVGA PSUs, see here (https://www.evga.com/support/warranty/power-supplies/). For Seasonic PSUs, see here (https://seasonic.com/support#period). For Corsair PSUs, see here (https://www.corsair.com/ca/en/warranty).
For all other PSU inquiries, look up the following review sites for the PSUs you're interested in buying:
These guys are engineering experts who take apart PSUs, analyze the quality of each product, and provide an evaluation of the product. Another great website is http://www.orionpsudb.com/, which shows which PSUs are manufactured by different OEMs.

Operating System (OS)

Windows 10

The most common OS. You can download the ISO here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10). For instructions on how to install the ISO from a USB drive, see here (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/install-windows-from-a-usb-flash-drive) or watch a video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLfnuE1unS8). For most users, go with the 64-bit version.
If you purchase a Windows 10 retail key (i.e., you buy it from a retailer or from Microsoft directly), keep in mind that you are able to transfer it between builds. So if you're building another PC for the 2nd, 3rd, etc. time, you can reuse the key for those builds PROVIDED that you deactivate your key before installing it on your new PC. These keys are ~$120.
However, if you have an OEM key (e.g., pre-builts), that key is tied specifically to your mobo. If you ever decide to upgrade your mobo on that pre-built PC, you might have to buy a new Windows 10 license. For more information, see this post (https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/feature/windows/windows-10-oem-or-retail-3665849/). The cheaper Windows 10 keys you can find on Kinguin are OEM keys; activating and deactivating these keys may require phoning an automated Microsoft activation line. Most of these keys are legitimate and cost ~$35, although Microsoft does not intend for home users to obtain this version of it. Buyer beware.
The last type of key is a volume licensing key. They are licensed in large volumes to corporate or commercial usage. You can find lots of these keys on eBay for ~$10, but if the IT department who manages these keys audit who is using these keys or if the number of activations have exceeded the number allotted on that one key, Microsoft could block that key and invalidate your license. Buyer beware.
For more information on differentiating between all three types of keys, see this page (https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/49586-determine-if-windows-license-type-oem-retail-volume.html).
If money is tight, you can get Windows 10 from Microsoft and use a trial version of it indefinitely. However, there will be a watermark in the bottom-right of your screen until you activate your Windows key.

MacOS

If you're interested in using MacOS, look into Hackintosh builds. This will allow you to run MacOS to run on PC parts, saving you lots of money. These builds are pretty picky about part compatibility, so you might run into some headaches trying to go through with this. For more information, see the following links:

Linux

If you're interested in a free open-source OS, see the following links:
For more information, go to /linux, /linuxquestions, and /linux4noobs.

Peripherals

Keyboards and Mice

Overall

Please note that the cost-performance builds will change daily because PC part prices change often! Some builds will have excellent cost-performance one day and then have terrible cost-performance the next. If you want to optimize cost-performance, it is your responsibility to do this if you go down this route!

Sorry for the lack of updates. I recently got a new job where I work 12 hours/day for 7 days at a time out of the city. What little spare time I have is spent on grad school and the gym instead of gaming. So I've been pretty behind on the news and some might not be up-to-date as my standards would have been with less commitments. If I've made any mistakes, please understand it might take a while for me to correct them. Thank you!

Powerful New Ethereum Miner Reaches Final Stage Before Mass Production

Powerful New Ethereum Miner Reaches Final Stage Before Mass Production

News by Coindesk: Wolfie Zhao
After a nine-month delay and $3.8 million of investment, an upstart manufacturer is ready to produce its first batch of powerful new machines for mining cryptocurrencies ethereum and ethereum classic.
Linzhi, based in Shenzen, China, said Wednesday it had ordered 37 wafers from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the main parts that will allow it to build about 200 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners.
These sample units will test whether the machines can mine as efficiently as they are designed to do using ethash, the proof-of-work algorithm used on ethereum and ethereum classic.
The testing units, if successful, would mark a major step toward mass production as Linzhi sets out to compete with makers of general-purpose computing chips, such as NIVIDA, as well as mining gear specialists Bitmain and InnoSilicon, which both make ASIC miners for the ethash algorithm.
Roughly five million ether (ETH), the native cryptocurrency on the ethereum network, is being mined every year, which, at its current price, is worth more than $800 million. Even for ethereum classic, which maintains the original ethereum ledger from before a hard fork in 2016, about nine million native ETC gets mined every year, worth more than $60 million.

Powerful chips

Linzhi was founded in February 2018 by Chen Min, a former chip design head at Canaan Creative, maker of the Avalon bitcoin miner. Chen told CoinDesk the new company was completely self-funded with about $4 million as starting capital.
It announced the plan to produce ethash ASIC miners in September 2018 with an ambition to beat the efficiency of most existing equipment. Chen’s target specification for Linzhi’s ethash ASIC miner is set at 1400 mega hashes per second (MH/s) with an electricity consumption level of one kilowatt-hour.
To put those figures in perspective, NVIDIA’s GTX TitanV 8 card is now one of the most profitable piece of equipment on the ethash algorithm, able to compute 656 MH/s at an energy consumption level of 2.1 kWh, according to mining pool f2pool’s miner profitability index,
With ETH’s current price ($180) and network difficulty, as well as an electricity cost of $0.04 per kWh, each GTX TitanV 8 would bring home a daily profit of $7.35. Similarly, if one uses the same GTX TitanV 8 card to mine ETC, which has both a lower price and a lower mining difficulty than ETH, the daily profit would still be around $6.70.
The total computing power racing on ethereum and ethereum classic to compete for block rewards and to secure the two networks is around 160 and 13 tera hashes per second (TH/s), respectively.

Plan A

Since the announcement of its plan, Linzhi has spent almost all of its initial capital on research and development of the chip design, the operations of its dozen-person team, and the order of the first batch of wafers, to bet the sample testing units will deliver the intended mining power.
Linzhi previously said it was aiming to order the first batch of wafers around December in order to have samples ready in April and mass production in June.
Speaking of the delay, the company said:
“We underestimated the complexity of the chip and how long it would take to grow the team and make the company functional. We are cautiously optimistic that we can just move forward the rest of the schedule, which would mean 12/2019 for sample machines and 02/2020 for mass production.”
One possible risk for the business is that the ethereum community has previously voted to activate the so-called ProgPow algorithm in order to remove the edge maintained by large miners that can afford expensive, specialized chips, although the timing for that switch is not yet decided. (Eventually, ethereum developers want to transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, which would eliminate mining altogether.)
When asked if Linzhi has any Plan B if the switch happens, Chen said the company is, in fact, more active in the ETC community, adding:
“Our plan A is to focus on ETC mining. So if ETH will still be an option, that’s something good to have. In the ethereum community, the ProgPow plan still has some uncertainty. For the time being, we don’t see it as a market that we will obtain, so I don’t really care that much.”

Reverse discount

In an arguably counterintuitive move, Chen said the company plans to adopt what it calls a “reverse discount” strategy when it starts to take in pre-orders if sample units prove to be successful. That would mean the more you buy, the more you are likely going to pay.
The reason is to discourage any single entity from buying too many machines and thus concentrating power over the network.
While Linzhi has not yet decided on final pricing for each unit to be sold at pre-orders, it says the goal is to achieve a payback period of four months for individual miners with a relatively small number of orders.
“This is our efforts and contribution to the idea of decentralization,” Chen said, concluding:
“Our sales will go to developers and community first, with a focus on geographical distribution, and potentially with a malus [reverse discount] for large orders. This means that small orders by individuals would be priced to hit the 4 month [return of investment] and larger orders would pay more.”

**Things I'd want:**
- Games with high trade value
- Unbundle games
- Something on my steam wishlist
- Roguelite/Roguelikes/Rpgs
- If you have a decent game that you think I might enjoy, feel free to bring it up, I'll check it out and like when people actually recommend games.
**Things I have no interest in:**
- Games that we both know no one will play/want to trade (here's looking at you, Puzzle Quest 9000/ Point and Click esque games!). I enjoy trading games almost as much as I do enjoy playing them. I don't like having a stale inventory. Please don't offer me something no one wants to play (Ex: games that are clearly designed with card farming in mind).
- Games that have been bundled a million times that will have no trade value because everyone has it already.

Happy December 15th, Let’s Make a Trade

Happy December 15th, Let’s Make a Trade
First, a look at four front offices around the league who are all rumored to be active making trades in December.
Houston: The Houston trade strategy is generally centered on flipping assets for big name pieces or to acquire young players who can eventually become assets to flip for major pieces. Their goal is to win a title this year, but currently their big 3 is Harden, Howard, and a really good role player in Parsons. Surprising/ not so surprising (he’s just taking his WS/48 from last year and playing at the same efficiency with more minutes, which is not incredibly uncommon for the rookie to sophomore transition. I mean the last player to do that in McHale’s system was some guy named Chandler Parsons) play from Terrence Jones has made them not necessarily need a power forward right now. Their two movable and valuable assets at the deadline are Asik and Lin. Their ideal scenario would involve flipping the both of them for a third star, a prospect on a rookie deal, and a backup center on an expiring contract as nobody is really willing to offer up a 2014 first these days.
LA Lakers: The LA front office is just now coming off of the big Kobe extension, which is essentially saying that they are really playing for the 2016 free agent class. They want to take on as little salary as possible for next year and no deals can involve a player with a guaranteed contract in 2016. There is something that just doesn’t work right between the D’Antoni offense and Pau Gasol. If the Lakers cannot find a trade partner for Gasol, they run a huge risk that he will leave for nothing. Further, signing Pau after the Kobe deal will likely eat most of their remaining cap (since they have to renounce his bird rights in order to sign anyone as he has almost a 28MM cap hold), which simply leaves them with the same team they have this year plus one B-C lister. Between D’Antoni’s system and Kobe, you have to give this squad an outside chance to be able to score points against anybody. The problem of course comes on the defensive side of the ball, perhaps even because of the aforementioned assets. Finally, the team could really use a stop gap point guard on an expiring deal until Blake and Farmar can play again.
Chicago Bulls: The Bulls are still somewhat in shock after the fall of Rose and appear to be in a colossal amount of trouble without him. Standing up to the titans of the east seems all but hopeless. They can either wall themselves up and try to wait out the year or look toward shifting strategies. Another major problem is that Deng is going to command over 10MM for his next contract, which will make Butler unaffordable when his extension comes up. Further, simply shipping Deng will create a huge hole on the wing as there is unfortunately only one Jimmy Butler available to play either the two or three each night. They also don’t want to invest heavily in a point guard because so many resources are still tied up in Rose. Even when all hope is lost, the Bulls still should feel they have a shot at playing dark horse in a weak east.
Milwaukee Bucks: This isn’t a Herb Kohl/John Hammond team if they aren’t looking to be active on the trade market in an attempt to get an 8 seed no matter how bad the team is currently playing. The trading block is currently, every player not named John Henson or Giannis Antetokounmpo. I’m pretty sure that giant billboard up in their city has only made them angrier. I think a good analogy would be George Bush, public opinion polls, and Iraq. In short, STAY THE COURSE: FOUR MORE YEARS. Thus, I apologize in advance to the rest of the fanbase for the trade I’m about to propose.
The Trade:
Houston sends Asik to LA and Lin to Milwaukee
LA sends Gasol to Chicago and Kaman to Houston
Chicago sends Deng to Houston and Boozer to Milwaukee
Milwaukee sends Knight to Houston, OJ Mayo to Chicago and Ilyasova/Ridnour to LA
Houston Perspective: Deng gives Houston its third star on an expiring deal. If he works, then they are set, if he doesn’t they open up the cap room to sign guy #3 next offseason. The idea is that Deng can play either the 3 or the 4 spread out around Dwight. This just might make them competitive in the West. Additionally, they pick up a prospect in Knight with two years left on his rookie deal. The big problem with Knight is that there aren’t a lot of places in the league for an off the ball point guard because that’s not how you play point guard. However, he’s still a high character guy with a lot of basketball talent. Houston offers a fairly unique situation where the PG is expected to play off ball next to Harden. LA may be a threat with Asik but not enough to turn down the offer. This may be his best chance to succeed in the league and certainly less of a waste than the Milwaukee situation. Kaman is just a one year commitment to act as a warm body at backup center. Morey will have flipped two quarters into a fifty cent piece and some bitcoin. This seems good for Houston.
Beverly/Knight/Brooks
Harden/Knight
Parsons/Deng
Deng/Jones
Howard/Kaman
Why Houston says no: What if Atlanta actually gives up Millsap for Asik?
LA Perspective:
Last year in a high paced offense that literally had four average to below average defenders, Asik had the ability to transform the Rockets into a good defensive team when he was on the court. The Lakers need that sort of presence if they want to at least scare a higher seed in the playoffs. D’Antoni wants to put his power forward on the three point line. Though Ilyasova is off to a slow start, he has still shown that he brings the same skillset as Ryan Anderson on offense (a closer look shows Anderson has a more refined post game while Ilyasova is the more dangerous of the two in the pick and pop). His final year on his contract is a team option so there is no commitment in 2016. When I watch him in Drew’s offense this year, I seem him caught catching in the midrange, not running pick and pops, and almost never catching for a corner 3. I don’t think Drew knows quite how to get the most out of a stretch four and keeps putting him in positions to shoot long two’s. D’Antoni is not going to complain about getting a hustle and 3’s power forward. Finally, Ridnour is a warm body who can play point guard to get the Lakers through this stretch where their current depth is Kobe/Xavier Henry.
RidnouKobe/X
Kobe/Meeks/X
Johnson/Swaggy
Ilyasova/Hill
Asik/Hill/Sacre
Why LA says no: The front office truly believes that Gasol will return for a discount and that they can get one more B lister to make a run or that Ilyasova/Asik/B lister is not as good or maybe they’re really all in for Melo to LA…
Chicago Perspective:
The offense as currently constructed spaces out Boozer and Noah to open up lanes for Rose to drive. With no Rose, the offense stagnates. There isn’t a good way to get a high end replacement on a one year rental without giving up picks. Here’s an idea that works. Miami can’t defend a true inside post scorer. Gasol has that in his game (we just don’t see it in the D’Antoni system). The Chicago offense is already one of the slowest paced offenses in the league, which lends well to dumping the ball into the post. Noah, though he scores inside, actually makes most of his catches that aren’t rebounds up high and then uses his quickness to get inside. Butler and Mayo are both good 3 point shooters for outlet passes. Mayo’s contract is also just small enough to avoid the tax with the Bulter extension while still giving the Bulls a starter at both the 2 and the 3. If they just let Deng expire, the best they can do is a MLE as a replacement. Gasol expires at the end of the year and the Bulls are left with some flexibility as well as room to bring their Euro over to fill in the vacant spot behind Gibson. This move gives them an outside chance to spoil in a weak east while still keeping things financially sound for the future. Simmons last podcast suggests that Chicago and LA are discussing some sort of Gasol to Chicago deal already so I can’t be totally crazy. I’m simply adding how they finish matching salaries by making sure Chicago still has starting quality players at both wing positions.
Kirk/Augustin
Mayo/Butler
ButleSnell
Gasol/Gibson
Noah/Gasol
Why Chicago says no: They decide that it’s worth keeping the team together to make one last run with this core next year. They plan to resign Deng and then are likely outbid for Butler in two years. It’s a big risk but could pay off if they can get a title in their one year window.
Milwaukee Perspective:
Brandon Knight is just plain not working in Milwaukee. Henson is excelling at center and either way is an inside guy. This becomes a bit of a problem when paired with another inside guy in Sanders. Drew’s offense really wants a power forward with a mid-range game for the offense to function. Having a team full of shooters and off ball players with nobody who can facilitate or drive is a terrible formula for winning games. As much as we should tank, I don’t think Hammond could turn down this offer.
Lin/Nate the Great
Middleton/Neal (Delfino)
Giannis/Middleton (Butler)
BoozeHenson/Udoh
Henson/Raduljica (Sanders/Zaza)
Though it isn’t really a tanking move, I don’t completely hate it. Until Butler returns, this move forces Giannis into the starting lineup as Middleton is capable of playing SG and you can’t start Gary Neal. This also gives Lin a chance to run a team even if that team turns out to just not be very good. Boozer maintains a veteran presence (whose spacing will let Henson work inside) during the rebuild. The team is still a top 5 pick in the West but it worries me that they might win a few too many games in the east once Larry comes back.
Why Milwaukee says no: Hammond has accepted that we are going to bottom out this season and the best way to do that is to keep a dysfunctional set of parts that don’t play well together on the floor.

Other Offers and Games

Usually won't buy games using Paypal unless it's a good offer.

Note: Just so you know, I am looking for Gift Links, if they are keys they are less valued, but still send offers as I am looking to create a deal. Thanks for reading.
Note: Every Key is worth $1.8, mainly looking to sell my games but sometimes I'll buy, just make an offer. Paypal preferred and also I belong to NZ so there will most likely be fees.
Note: I will not reserve anything for you unless it's a good offer or if you give me something so I can reserve it for you. If I get a better trade I will gladly take it, please do not feel offended if this does happen. Unless I have agreed to a trade it has definitely been reserved for you, otherwise, first come first serve.
Note: Be 100% certain you are trading with me, double check my profile and my steamtrades profile just to see if they are the same. If they are not, unfriend and block, make sure you check the steamtrades rep of everyone you are trading with.
Note: Cryptocurrency wise, I may ask for overpay, also send via friends and family in Paypal if you are incapable of doing that I will request payment and you will have to take in fees.
